“liberty, equality, fraternity” the national motto of France

A legacy of the Age of Enlightenment, the motto “Liberté, égalité, fraternité” first appeared during the French Revolution. It was written into the 1958 constitution and is nowadays part of the French national heritage.

July 14 is the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille in 1789, the turning point in the French Revolution. Bastille Day is the common name given in English-speaking countries to the national day of France, which is celebrated on 14 July each year. In French, it is formally called Féte nationale “National Celebration” and commonly and legally le 14 juillet, “the 14th of July”
