Tal Shtuhl & RJ Johnson Quartet
Saxophonist and composer Tal Shtuhl first discovered music as a young child, when he began composing his own songs on his toy keyboard. He began playing the saxophone several years later and began formal music education at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts in 2005. He continued to study music at Temple University, where he studied with Dick Oatts, Ben Schachter, Terell Stafford, and others. During this time, he gained a personal and musical foundation which allowed him to find and begin the pursuit of his own musical vision. A recent graduate, Tal is active in the Philadelphia music scene, performing with local greats including John Swana, Mike Boone, Byron Landham, Craig Ebner, Luke Brandon, Luke O’Reilly, Lucas Brown, the Budesa brothers, Jeff Bradshaw, and Tye Tribbett. He is also an instructor of jazz theory, ensemble playing, and private lessons at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz.
The RJ Johnson Quartet is a band which focuses largely on original compositions which are inspired by the harmonic aspects of classical music and the interplay of jazz. Stylistically, the band works towards performing music which is both adventurous and cohesive. The band has been performing for about 5 years and has had a varying personnel throughout its development. After several long term residencies, the band has now developed a full book of original compositions
