The Moonstone Poetry Series Present Mentor and Mentored
Sydney Coffin and his University City High School Students
Mentoring a poet is like feeding a kid with chopsticks; at first you can’t even pick up anything to feed them and they talk too much instead of eating, then after awhile they taste how rich the food is with sauce, flavor, and nourishment, and they gobble it down. After awhile they want to learn to eat on their own, research recipes, and learn the history of such an ancient culture, and before you know it they’ve learned the language and leave you. If you’re lucky, they take you with them.
My students have taken me somewhere with them. We make the language up as we go, learning to understand our selves and each other. Reading at Moonstone Arts will invariably include Jamar Lake Robinson (graduate), Isaiah Proctor, Erica Williams (seniors), Unique Roberts, Tamera Bailey, and Patience Carter (juniors), and an assortment of newer faces. The photo is of me with Jamar. I have taught at Uni for the past 7 years.” Sincerely, Sydney Coffin/University City HS
