March 8th is National Be Nasty Day and International Women’s Day.
It reminded me of an event we did 2017 when “Nasty Women Poets: An Unapologetic Anthology of Subversive Verse” edited by Grace Bauer & Julie Kane came out. It is an excellent anthology, and the event was lots of fun, as women responded to Donald Trump’s comment that Hillary Clinton was a Nasty Woman.
“Like beauty, “nasty” is in the eye of the beholder… The call for poems made it clear that we were looking for broader—and more varied—perspectives on women’s experience. Women poets have always been resisting, reclaiming, and reinventing—sometimes subtly, sometimes more overtly. To my mind, any refusal to allow others to define what it means to be a woman is a kind of resistance.” – Grace Bauer
Poets respond in this spirit, in the second year of the pandemic.
