New Voices: Emerging Poets

New Voices is a program designed for emerging poets under the age of 25. It aims to create a platform for young poets by welcoming them into the larger Philadelphia poetry collaborative and giving them the opportunity to share their work with a wide audience.

Cydney Brown is the 2020-2021 Philadelphia Youth Poet Laureate. She is currently a Junior at Abington Friends School. She grew to love poetry by reading poems by Maya Angelou and Robert Frost. She loves how there are no limitations with writing. She wrote a book of poems entitled “Daydreaming” and is currently working on another. Her poetry explores the topics of love, self image, and social justice. She won first place in The Hip Hop workshop poetry competition in 2020. Cydney wishes to inspire people to stand up for what they believe in and to share her poetry with the world.

Husnaa Haajarah Hashim is the 2017-2018 Youth Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, and author of the poetry collection Honey Sequence (The Head and The Hand, 2018). She is an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. Husnaa has competed at Brave New Voices, performed at various conferences, festivals, and Philadelphia-area colleges, and received numerous Scholastic Art and Writing Awards including a National American Voices Medal awarded at Carnegie Hall. Husnaa’s work has been published by Apiary and The On Being Project among others.

Teyanna Stone is a storyteller, a creator of worlds through song, poetry, and other forms of art. A proud Philly girl and a Temple University student majoring in Media Studies and Production and additionally studying Theater and Music, Teyanna is exploring her interests in the arts. When it comes to poetry, her pen goes to love songs, life struggles, and sci-fi and fantasy adventures.
