Celebrating the 240 birthday of Simon Bolivar (July 24, 1783) and Latin American Poetry

In Latin America, creating poetry is a common practice, one that is deeply rooted in people’s everyday lives. Cleaning ladies, priests, and academics all recite the same verses remembered from childhood. They all attend the same poetry readings, which are more popular than sports events, another unusual characteristic of Latin American poetry. Given the universality of poetry with in these societies, it is easy to understand how is it applied to all facets of life from political discussions and slogans to children’s lullabies and bedtime stories.

Simon Bolivar, the political leader who led what are currently the countries of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Bolivia to independence from the Spanish Empire, known colloquially as El Libertador and regarded as a national and cultural icon throughout Latin America; the nations of Bolivia and Venezuela (as the Boliviarian Republic of Venezuela) and their currencies are named after him. Join us as we celebrate the 240 birthday of Simon Bolivar (July 24, 1783) with that reflect the struggle for freedom. Written in many languages with English translations. Remembering Woody Guthrie

The Radicalism of Woody Guthrie | Portside

“Wherever little children are hungry and cry

Wherever people ain’t free

Wherever men are fightin’ for their rights

That’s where I’m a-gonna be, Ma

That’s where I’m a-gonna be”

Excerpt from Tom Joad by Woody Guthrie

Woody Guthrie was an American singer-songwriter, one of the most significant figures in American folk music whose work focused on themes of American socialism and anti-fascism. He has inspired generations both politically and musically with songs such as “This Land Is Your Land”, written in response to the American exceptionalist song “God Bless America”. Woody’s empathy allowed him to insert himself into the stories of others, and he shared those narratives through music, prose, and artwork. Join us as poets continue this tradition.
